In NYC over bubbly, we chatted with Sweta Jain of Goshwara about her favorite stones to work with and expressed her love and care of materials through her designs. Sweta grew up accompanying her father to mines throughout Africa, immersing herself in the intricate process of transforming raw material into exceptional stones. We got to try on some of her most quintessential silhouettes that showed off the brilliant color and beauty of each stone.
Gem X London members were treated to an evening of gem discovery with an evening at the office of Marcus McCallum FGA. An esteemed gemologist and gemstone specialist, Marcus established his business in London’s historical jewelry district of Hatton Garden in 1984, specializing in exquisite one-off gemstones and an exceptional portfolio of pearls. Members had the privilege of a hand-on look through his collections of exceptional stones and with it, the chance to learn more about each piece, its origins and unique characteristics. We also went for a smart and sharp behind-the-scenes peek of all things cufflinks and signet rings with Deakin & Francis. Specialists of their craft since 1796, Deakin & Francis are Britain’s finest purveyors of cufflinks, signet rings and gentlemans accessories, using the same Birmingham workshop as their 18th century founders to create their treasures. We finished out the month with a VIP trip to the Goldsmiths’ Fair to see some of our friends of Gem X and Gem X Scholar Ellis Mhairi Cameron.
Gem X LA spent a sunday afternoon with Celine Dussaud of De.Vos and Thesis. Members got an intimate viewing of the beautiful virtuoso of movement and light in Celine’s work with a hands-on look at her capsule collection. We tried on rings inspired by the Belle Epoque “en tremblant” technique that danced on our fingers, and gem set bands with intertwining gold ribbons. It was a delight being able to see and feel these pieces in person.

How do you discover the history of a jewelry company that vanished and left no archives? Dreicer & Co. was one of the most important American jewelry houses of the Gilded Age, famous for its singular strands of pearls, intricate platinum mountings, and ability to procure rare and historic gemstones. But with the tragic death of the founder’s son, who was to run the business, the company liquidated in 1927. In this Gemflix chat, Anna Rasche graciously took us on a treasure hunt through public records and archives, and all around New York City, to uncover the history of Dreicer & Co.

Sunday 27th October | Gem X Book Club: The Stone Witch of Florence
We’re delighted to invite you to the second instalment of the Gem X Book club of 2024, featuring the debut novel from gemologist and historian Anna Rasche, The Stone Witch of Florence.
The year is 1348, set against the backdrop of the Black Plague ravaging Italy, Anna Rasche tells the tale of Ginevra di Gasparo, a healer with the unique gift of harnessing the hidden powers of gemstones to cure the sick, for which she was condemned as a witch and banished to exile. Ginevra however is now begged to return by the same men who cast her out – she obliges, assuming the city’s leaders will now accept her unorthodox cures as sickness tears through the land. But upon arrival, she is tasked with using her collection of jewels to track down a ruthless thief who is ransacking Florence’s churches for priceless relics; the city’s only hope for protection. Ginevra soon realises she is a mere pawn in a much larger, more dangerous scheme, revealing a tale of magic, mystery, high stakes and the true price of precious jewels.
The Stone Witch of Florence is released on October 8th and can be pre-ordered/purchased here. We recommend reading the first half by October 27th and the second half, by November 9th. This is a private event for members. RSVP HERE
