On a hot summer’s day, we spent an evening in the coolness of Ssorate Tea Room to learn about the art of Kintsugi, and its inspiration behind Milamore Jewelry 〽️ Designed in New York and crafted in Japan, the work focuses on the core pillars of Japanese philosophy – wabi-sabi, yin and yang and kintsugi – anchored in principles of balance, resilience and consideration. George spoke about his own personal items of Kintsugi, his family heritage and legacy, matcha, calligraphy, and resonating with the art through personal experience. It was fascinating to learn about the practices and a treat to be able to see Georges’ creations up close. This year New York City celebrates 50 years of hip-hop as a global phenomenon. We spent the day at the AMNH Museum looking at the hallmark oversized gold chains of 1980s rappers to the diamond-smattered custom orders sported by musicians-turned-business moguls.

In case you missed out on our “Ice Cold” tour in the Mineral Hall of the American Museum of Natural History, you can watch our Gemflix in conversation with curator and author, Vikki Toback. In the first book of its kind, author, journalist and curator Vikki Tobak uses 40 years of iconic imagery and captivating stories to trace, in her words, “the swaggering, bold and transcendent history of hip-hop and jewelry.” From diamond-encrusted grills to dazzling custom pieces worn by the likes of LL Cool J and Rihanna, the book takes a visually stunning and fascinating look at the forces that have shaped the bling, and at the significance of the jewels for the musicians and the cultural phenomena of hip-hop.
