On a chilly Sunday evening, members braved the snow and made their way to The Winter Show at the Park Avenue Armory. Led by core member Levi Higgs, our visit began with a champagne toast at Simon Teakle with core member Christine Cheng. Simon led us through a tour of his marvelous cases of Antique and Vintage jewelry where he showcased a stunning Tiffany Bow Brooch and dazzling Van Cleef & Arpels pieces from a distinguished private collection. At Macklowe Gallery, amongst the Tiffany Lamps and Vases we were enchanted by a Carved Rock Crystal, Jadeite and Emerald Brooch by Maboussin. James Robinson brought out their antique treasures including a Victorian mounted Ptolemaic Faience Brooch depicting the Gods; Osiris, Amon Ra, Sekhmet, and Wadjet.

Greetings from sunny Tucson! The hunt for beautiful gems and minerals is off to a fantastic start. To kickoff our trip at the gem show, we hosted a mixer for Gem X members in Tucson to mingle and share stories at Granada Gallery. There, we saw some prehistoric fossils, played with some million dollar gems and bonded with our gracious hosts Daniel Moesker. Afterwards, we met with Joanna Hardy and Fuli Gemstones for an excellent presentation on the “The Gem of the Sun”, Peridot. Worshiped by the Egyptians, we explored the rich history and the stone’s ties to royal jewelry. Located in the foothills of the tranquil Changbai Mountains lies the Fuli Gemstones mine, the largest peridot deposit in the world. Later in the week, we met for breakfast with Top Notch Faceting, and ogled over his colorfully cut creations.

New adventures await in this new year! Browse our City Guides to find over 20 destinations full of unique experiences and must see sights. Gem X Member, Lisa Kramer, was kind enough to detail her most recent trip to Marrakech and shared her “hidden gems”. Check out her recommendations below!

Monde des Arts de la Parure
The Monde des Arts de la Parure (known at MAP) is a new jewelry museum in Marrakech. Opened in November of 2022, it is not yet listed in guidebooks or included on tour itineraries, but an absolute must-visit for jewelry lovers. Its focus is on ethnic jewelry from around the world with vitrines full of jewelry organized by region. There are small plaques in the cases to note where the jewelry is from, and QR codes with more detailed information and historical photos showing it being worn.

The museum is located in the southern part of the Medina in the Kasbah, and adjacent to the Mellah. It is in a beautiful new building that was inspired by traditional Moroccan architecture. On the roof there is a lovely roof garden with cafe, a delightful place to recharge after looking at the jewelry.
The Majorelle Gardens/Berber Museum/Yves Saint Laurent Museum complex
No trip to Marrakech is complete without a visit to The Majorelle Gardens/Berber Museum/Yves Saint Laurent Museum complex. Try to schedule your visit for the first admission time of the day to minimize crowds and to avoid the heat; by the time I arrived for my scheduled visit at 11:00 it was already packed. The gardens allow photos, but the Berber Museum does not, and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum seemed to allow photos in some areas, and not in others (upon entry, they said photos were allowed, I was able to take photos of some sketches, but when I got into the room with clothing was stopped by the guard from taking photos).

Even though photos weren’t allowed, the Museums sold some nice small books showing jewelry and clothing in the collections, worth adding to your jewelry book library. And don’t worry if you’ve watched “Inventing Anna”: a joint ticket to The Majorelle Gardens/Berber Museum/Yves Saint Laurent Museum is about $30, not thousands (apparently special private tours can be arranged for a high fee, but regular admission is affordable).

Across the street from the Majorelle Gardens is a street of upscale shops selling clothing and gifts by contemporary Moroccan designers including 33 Rue Majorelle, the well-known concept shop.
