We dug out our Serpenti, polished our Ouroboros and layered on snake themed jewels, for a Lunar New Year of the Snake Gem X Winter Mixer. Members gathered at the gorgeous Bar Bastion in midtown Manhattan, to toast a new year of jewelry adventures and catch up with jewelry friends old and new. Inspired by the endless parables and symbolism of this storied motif, we were inspired by Elizabeth Taylor’s Bulgari Serpenti, Art Nouveau jewels and the romance of Queen Victoria’s engagement ring. It was certainly ssssspecial.
A keen attention to materials and a fresh, thoughtful approach to design defines Thelma West’s work—something a group of Gem X’ers in London had the opportunity to discover earlier this week. From spending years learning how to use titanium to make the perfect diamond-framing claws for rings (no small feat), to sourcing stones only from the most ethically responsible mines and restoring a historic manor in Puglia with the highest regard for craftsmanship and the environment, Thelma’s work is rooted in patience, precision, and passion. And through it all, her boldly beautiful design sensibility shines. A huge thank you to Thelma for welcoming us into her world and sharing the stories behind her jewels!
We are still charmed from our sunny trip to Tucson. Gem X members gathered in Tucson for a mutli day excursion to attend the AGTA, GJX and Pueblo Gem shows. During our gem hunt at the shows we were kindly hosted by Granada Gallery for a cocktail hour and Ancients 17 had us for breakfast over trays of dazzling opals. Thank you to everyone who joined us along the way! It was a colorful trip and we are already dreaming and scheming our journey back next year.

There is often more than meets the eye regarding jewelry. From ancient symbolism, to bodily adornments, to spelling out words with gemstones, gestures of love, strength, defiance, loyalty and friendship – these are the stories as secrets of jewelry through time – and now, the subject of a new installation at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston titled For Your Eyes Only: The Secret Language of Jewelry. Guided by Christine Gervais we viewed a sublime example of MFAH’s exceptional curations, this new showcase features several Lover’s Eyes, 20th century jewels and examples of African and Indian jewelry; highlighting hidden aspects in jewelry privy to only the wearer.
