The Stunning Jewels of Portgual
A Trip with Renowned Historian Rui Galopim de Carvalho
When we heard that our friend and Portugal guide, Rui Galopim de Carvalho, had worked on the Crown Jewels, we knew a field trip was in order. With great anticipation, we arrived at the @museutesouroreal to learn more about Portugal’s rich history as told through its jeweled treasures. From the Crown of João VI, to the matching Stars diadem and necklace (made by Maria Pia of Savoy, a jewelry loving Queen), to the diamond encrusted snuffbox, it was one gasp followed by another.
For our last stop in Lisbon. We arrived at Espadim 1985, a local antique jewelry house that is a favorite of our guide, @portugalgemas. There, we were able to build on all the knowledge we had gained during our jewelry excursion to see and handle historic examples of jewels. From delicate 18th century earrings, to a regal gold and silver diamond brooch, to parures of topaz and coral treasures, we ended our excursion on a brilliant and high note.
